Goodbye Buddy

Last night my mom let Patch outside. While he was out there his right back leg gave out & he was crying out in pain. This continued after he came inside. I gave him a tramadol for pain & brought him to the emergency animal clinic. They ended up sedating him & giving him more pain medication because he was still in pain & not cooperative for the exam. The x-rays showed quit a few hip & knee issues so we were going to follow up with the orthopedic surgeon today. Patch was not himself when we left the clinic. He wouldn't walk & his breathing was labored. I even called back to make sure this was normal. Patch settled down & his breathing went back to normal within two hours. I checked on him when I woke up at 5:30 & he was sleeping peacefully. At 7:30 I went in to give Patch his pain meds before leaving for work & he had passed. I'm not sure what happened. He had taken the same pain medications & sedatives many times before but this time was different. Looking back, Patch hasn't been himself for a while. He has been eating & playing less, sleeping more, & having more trouble getting around. I guess his poor body had been through too much. Cole came home to say goodbye & we were able to take him to the vet together. The vet did a molding of Patch's paw & provided us with the Rainbow Bridge Poem. They will be cremating his body for us & we are thinking of a deserving resting place.

Today was a sad day with many tears. Our buddy Patch was very loved & will be so missed! He was a great dog & such an important member of our family. We are so thankful for 10 great years!
